Basic website navigation can be broken down into three parts: Buttons, Sections and Pages.  On this page we'll discuss the very top level of your web site's navigation... Buttons.


Buttons show up in your Main Menu, is the top level of your navigation and generally breaks your website up into it's major components.  At this level, one button will generally not have anything to do with another button, except that it is about you or your organization.  On a basic site these will be: Home, Services, News, About Us and Contact Us.  This is a good brochure site layout and one with which you should probably start.


To create a Button you'll use the "Edit Menu".  This menu shows up on the top left of the web page when you are logged into the site and have edit capabilities to the page you are on.

The contents of the Edit Menu will change depending on your level of security, defining the items you are able to edit.

Only Publication Administrators (PUBADMIN) have the capability to add or edit Main Menu Buttons.


If you are a PUBADMIN, you will see the menu items to manage the Buttons on your website.  These menu items are: "Edit [button name] Button", "Add A Button" and "Delete [button name] Button". The text "[button name]" will be replaced with the button you are currently on. 

In order to Edit or Delete a button, first, navigate to the button you wish to manage by clicking on it.  Now when you lower the Edit Menu, you will see the options to Edit and Delete the button you are on.

You can Add a button from any location within your site.  The button will be added to the end of your Main Menu by default.  You can change this location while you are editing or adding the button.


When you Add or Edit a button, you will see a screen similar to the one you see here on the left with the following items you can edit:

  • Name: The text you enter in the Name field will show as the text within your button.
  • Description: The Description is a longer explanation of the contents contained within this part of your web site.  This text will be displayed in a "pop-up" when you hover your mouse over the button.
  • Sequence: The set of options within this "Pull-down" allows you to adjust the position of this button within your Main Menu.  Sequence or Seq 1 will display at left most of a horizontal menu or at the top of a vertical menu.  See our page on "Stylizing your Menus" to see how to change between horizontal and vertical menus. (This page is not yet complete)
  • Additional Editors: PUBADMINs can edit all pages within your website.  If you would like to grant an additional group of users to be able to edit the pages within this Button, you can select them here.  There are several Security Groups built into your web site (i.e. Members, Guests, PUBADMIN, etc...).  You can, however add any number of additional Security Groups so you can divide up the editing capabilities of your website.  See the instructions on "Security Groups" to see how to add and maintain these Groups. (This page is not yet complete)
  • Restrict Viewing To: By default, all pages you create are viewable to everyone.  You do not have to be "logged in" to see these pages.  However, you can secure pages so they can be viewed only by select members.  By selecting a Group or Groups here, you will restrict the viewing of all pages within this button to the Group(s) you select.  In fact, unless you are a member of a group chosen here, you will not even see the button.
  • OK and Cancel: When you press "OK" your changes will be saved.  If you press "Cancel", no changes will be made, and if this was a new button, the button will not be created.

Once you create a Button, a Content Section is automatically created for you with the name name as the button you just created..  A "Content" section has the most common type of page in a website.  It has no special attributes, it is a basic page of text and images.  You are looking at a page within a "Content" section right now.  You can then go ahead and add or edit the information on this page by using the Edit menu and selecting the "Edit [page name] Page" or "Add A Page" menu item or you can change the name and type of the default Section by selecting the "Edit [section name] Section" menu item from the Edit menu.


That's it... that's all you need to know to create and maintain the Buttons that show up in the Main Menu of your website.
